How Wierd

This is the forecast for the next week. Look at today and then Sunday.

Sunday's low will be what today's High is!

They say in Colorado that if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it will change. I have never seen such a huge change in my life. They got 2 feet of snow, and it looks like by Sunday it will all be melted.
It started yesterday around 3 in the
morning and continued all day, into the night and is still snowing today. However it has gotten a bit lighter, but it is still snowing.

I have a web cam I use to check how Mom's weather is doing. I usually can see my mountains that I grew up looking at. It usually looks like this

But today it looks like this.

I hope you are having a nice day in your part of the world.

A Paper Snowflake

asside: Don't you LOVE the fabric in this post? I am looking for more. It is made by Nathan & Co. and I purchased it at WalMart. I have been to WalMart's all over the valley and cannot find it anymore. If anyone sees it anywhere, get a phone number from the seller & let me know. I will personally call that place and pay them to ship it to me.
Ok, On with my Tutorial
I saw this snowflake hanging in our library. In fact I saw many, many, many snowflakes hanging all over our library. There were HUGE ones and small ones. I could tell it was a cut/paste type of a craft, but couldn't figure, for the life of me, how to make one.

The kind librarian took the time to make one of the "arms" of the flake, if that is what you call it. Anyway. Once she gave me the instructions, I figured I had better make one, make a tutorial and be done with it, otherwise I would forget how.
OH and you can click on any picture to enlarge it.
So here is your paper snowflake tutorial:
Make a square by folding diagonally, so one side meets the right angle side. Cut off the excess and don't use your mom's best fabric scissors. It doesn't matter what size. fold diagonally once more.Do five more just like the first one. For larger snowflakes, sometimes it is better to make a total of eight. But that is really not a snowflake anymore, because they only have six sides.

K, so you have three sides to the triangle. For the sake of clarity (I hope), I will assign names to each side. Side A will be the side with one fold, side B will be the side with two folds, and side C will be the side with four edges. Does that make sense? I'm not so good with tutorials, I think. . .
If you have any questions on which side is which, I have put a note on each side of the triangle in my flickr site. Just hover the mouse over the picture and the note will pop up.

Next, with a pencil, draw a faint line 1/2 inch away from side B. You will be cutting UP TO this line. Then draw several lines parallel to side C all the way to the middle point, about 1/2 inch apart from one another.
With the paper folded in fourths, cut through all layers on the parallel lines.

Now for the folding: Once all are cut on the lines, open them up to the square.

take the innermost two triangles and put tape or glue on the tips and join them together.

then turn the whole piece over and take the next two points. Glue them in the center

flip it again, glue the next two points together

flip it again and glue the outer points together

by now you should have something that looks like this.

Then all you have to do is join them. take three arms and staple three points together. Do the same with the other three.

then look at the diagram. Each "x" represents where you staple. Staple the two halves together.

punch a hole in the top of one and hang from the ceiling.
if you have any questions, please ask me via email.
annieofbluegables121@gmail.com I will try to explain better. yikes tutorials are hard!

Its May! Many Blessings! (or L is for. . .)

L is for Love, (new) Life, Lambs, lilacs, lavender and. . . er well, spring. Well, L is not for Spring, but Spring brings all those L words into play, right?

The above image shows all my children, in-law children and grandchildren. It was so fun to meet at my gracious sister's & bro-in-law's home. We had a great day.

Yesterday we attended SIL3's graduation. We are so PROUD of him. He got his Master's degree in only one year in accounting, while working part time and his wife working full time. He also landed a great accounting job in town that starts in August, they purchased a home and are expecting in August. WAY TO GO!
We met up with his wonderful parents and sister (niece & nephew) & brother (they are SUCH NICE people~lucky D3), watched the graduation and then went out to eat. They picked Applebees, and lo-and-behold, we had a gift card from Christmas, so we had a very hardy meal for only $10 extra plus tip. Thanks MIL(mother-in-law)

May is a wonderful month. The weather is still fickle, its lambing season (I love lambs), lilacs are in bloom. I really love the spring, and especially lilac season. One of my favorite flowers, besides iris and tulips. The violets are growing wild in the grass. They smell so good.

May 1st there was an amazing storm which landed 23" of snow on the Alta Ski resort, so people were still skiing in May. This is something I wanted to record: snow and skiing in May.

Monday I get the privilege of standing to the side while D2 has a C-section. This is something I never even imagined I would get to observe. Of course, I have been present and awake for all 6 of my own children's births, but to be there for a daughter giving birth, even if it is a C-section, and especially if it is a C-section, makes me feel very humble and blessed, at the same time makes me feel awe. Thank You D2 and SIL2. I am very much looking forward to meeting this new, sweet little grand daughter. If she is anywhere close to as cute as her brother, she will be stunning. These two have the right recipe for cute. All my kids seem to have great gene combinations. All the grand children are stunning as is evident in the picture above. I'm a proud grandma (sorry)!
enjoy

Poetry

My darling Granddaughter wrote some poems and she gave them to me in her handwriting. She is my S1's oldest daughter.
These poems are precious. And I told her that I would put them on my blog. She was excited about that.
She is so amazing for only being 6 years old. So without further adieu. . .
The first is called "Snow"

Snow
white
fluffy
soft
cold
snow.
Silvery
see-through
sparkley
slippery
snow.

When she read that to me, I was amazed a tiny girl her age is writing poetry.

the second one is called "Sky"

Sky

Sky is blue
Sky is green
Sky is pretty
everything

You've seen
Sky is blue
Sky is red
Is Sky purple?
ask your dad.

I saved the "Best" for last. . .
I will write it exactly how she wrote it. She did this on purpose:

Best

am the Best
reader

am the Best
witer
somehow
or outer.

But am not
the Best
spelerr

btw. She is only in 1st grade, and around Christmas her parents learned she is reading at the top level of a 2nd grader who is about to graduate to 3rd grade. Thank goodness for a great school and teacher who is willing to continue to challenge her. Unlike my D1's 2nd grade teacher.

D1 was reading words at age 3. She was reading scriptures with expression so well, by the age of 5 we gave her the Bible we had purchased to give to her on her 8th birthday. She was reading Little House on the Prairie-type books by 1st grade. When I approached the teacher in 2nd grade, asking him to give her harder books, he said he was not allowed. She had to twiddle her thumbs and wait for the class to catch up. It took clear until she was a junior in HS before it caught up with her. She is still very intelligent, I don't think that goes away, just because the teachers don't comply. I quite enjoy her enthusiasm for life and learning.

But to my little grand daughter and to her mom and dad, I salute you. It is such a fun adventure to watch these sweet children grow and become amazing people, isn't it?

Really Happy Birthday

I have always loved December not only because of Christmas, but the 1st starts the season with my birthday. Mom said she always got into the Christmas mood because the toys were now in the stores and she had so much to choose from. I really don't remember any specific birthday gifts, but I did get some amazing dolls for Christmas every year, which have resulted in a huge collection in my sewing room and all over the house.

Yesterday started out waking up beside my sweet husband and opening my eyes and stirring to see him open his eyes and the first words out of his mouth were to wish me a happy birthday. Just the fact that I have gotten to wake up beside him almost every day for 33 1/2 years made me feel so happy and blessed to have him. Right away he jumped up and got some things out of the cupboard, a book and a dvd I have been wishing for. Another book arrived in the mail later. He said there is still more to come. He discovered my Amazon.com wish list and ordered a bunch.

There was only one snag in my day, when I thought I had lost some tickets my daughter had given me for a concert on Sunday. We spent about an hour looking (no tearing the house apart) for them and finally gave up and left for our 2 1/2 hour trip north to our choir concert. After we left, we made a stop at the filling station to get some soft drinks, and while waiting, I decided to put some things in the trunk and there, among the mail I need to take to the newly wed couple was that envelope with the tickets.

During the morning of packing and frantically looking for my tickets, I got many sweet calls from my children, neighbor, and my sister in the next state along with my mom who left a message by singing Happy Birthday to me. And both sons who have children allowed each of their children to talk with me as well. That was so sweet to hear their tiny voices whispering, "Happy Birthday Grandma." One doesn't talk, but she said "mmmf" several times as I responded to her and her dad coached her from the other side. She is always willing to try anything they ask her. Another one said, "what is your last name? I need to know which grandma I am talking to. Are you the one in (neighboring state), or the one in (my state)? When I answered, she said "YEA! This is (her name)" One other tiny one talked so well, I thought at first she was the older sister until I heard her dad say, "very good, (her name)." All of them are precious.

Because of the frantic, unscheduled ticket hunt, we arrived a bit late to the rehearsal, but no one except the conductors wife really noticed. She had saved me a seat next to her with a birthday present under the chair. She is a dear friend, and I was so honored she remembered me. Several others in the choir wished me a happy day as well.

My birthday present to the world, or the city was to sing to them. The concert was just beautiful. It was preceded by a beautiful snow that stayed on the trees like someone had flash frozen it to them. The storm made it all the more perfect for a Christmas Concert. We were all in the Christmas mood. Every year, Our Choir puts this on for the Angel Tree, which is sponsored by the Salvation Army. They have Christmas trees set up in the foyer with tags shaped like Angels. The tags say if it is a child or a Senior citizen and the gender of the individual, and their wish, which is one or two items. It is very humbling to see their Christmas wishes, like a pair of sox or gloves. They are very simple and not extravagant. You can pick an angel off the tree and buy a gift for that elderly person or child and deliver it to any Macy's in the valley to help their Christmas be a better one. The ticket sales profits from our concert go to the Salvation Army as well. The downstairs of the auditorium was packed.

The Grinch made a surprise appearance and then Santa came out and chased him away and handed out candy canes to the children while we had a community sing-in.
Our guest soloist, Greg Pearson has an amazingly beautiful bass voice and sang "You're a Mean One, Mr.Grinch" so well and out of the side of his mouth no less. Then with just as much passion he sang the Innkeeper from Forgotten Carols, by Michael McLean which gives me chill bumps every time.

A children's choir, Studio A Children's choir joined us and sang some songs with us and some on their own. And every year, the same Symphony Orchestra teams up with us for this concert. The evening was perfect. We topped it all off singing the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah.

Later I went to the balcony where my family was waiting, and several of the kids gave me gifts. I wasn't expecting this, but I got a nativity scene and How the Grinch Stole Christmas DVD. Perfect!

We reconviened in the parking lot to give things to the kids they requested from the house, a box of apples for one, a pie plate accidentally forgotten from Thanksgiving, and more cards and gifts for the newlywed couple. Then we bid goodbye to the kids. Because of Sunday's concert, we were spending the night with my sister and her husband, so we headed that way.

When we arrived, I called her on my cell to tell her we were outside and she opened the garage door to let us park inside for the night. As we went in, there on her counter top was an ice cream cake from Cold Stone! And part of my family, singing Happy Birthday to me! D1, SIL1 and my sister's youngest son and his cute wife along with my sister and her husband. I totally didn't expect that! I cannot remember having a surprise party since my childhood, OR a cake I didn't have to make!. In fact this morning, when I was talking to my granddaughter on the phone she asked what kind of cake I was going to have, and I told her probably none, because we were leaving the house for a couple of days.

Wow, what a sweet honor. I feel so loved, and now, I just noticed a blog friend, Lori wished me a happy birthday on her blog. Let me just say, I really feel honored, humbled and blessed for all the love I have felt today. And I wish you, dear reader, the same kind of birthdays too, whenever they may be.
a

PS tomorrow or the next, I will post some of the movies taken at this concert. They are taken on a digital camera that only takes 3~minute~tiny movies, so they are not the best quality, but you can hear us sing. It was the best concert I think we have done.

3 Dec 07~ Sunday we went to a Christmas Devotional in The Conference Center put on by our Church in Salt Lake City. These are the tickets my daughter got for us. It was so beautiful and a sweet way to kick off the Christmas season. I love this time of year.
